Preparing for Your In-Home Newborn Session

Your newborn session is designed to unfold slowly, intentionally, and in the spaces where your life is actually being lived. This is not about perfection — it’s about presence. I photograph newborns at home because these early days deserve to be documented exactly as they are.

A Gentle Flow (Especially With Siblings)

If there are siblings joining us, we’ll begin the session with them right away. Young children have short attention spans, and honoring that allows the experience to feel calm and successful for everyone. We’ll capture sibling connections first — snuggles on the bed, curiosity in the nursery, quiet moments of closeness — before they naturally drift back to play or rest. This approach keeps things relaxed and allows the remainder of the session to move at a softer pace centered around your newborn.

Where We’ll Photograph

We’ll move organically through the areas of your home that hold the most light and meaning. Typical spaces include:

The nursery — quiet details, tiny hands, rocking moments

The primary bedroom — soft light, skin-to-skin, family connection

The living room — cuddled on the couch, natural interaction

The kitchen — coffee brewing, hands busy, life continuing

The porch or outdoor entry — gentle light and a sense of place

Your home doesn’t need to be styled or staged. I’ll guide us toward the best light and let the rest unfold naturally.

Lived-In Is the Goal

I photograph life as it is — not as it’s curated. Pour yourself a cup of coffee. Sit on the couch. Read a book. Rock your baby near a window. Let siblings snack, draw, or climb into your lap. These quiet, ordinary moments are the ones that matter most, and they’re often the most beautiful.

What to Wear

Soft, neutral tones photograph effortlessly and keep the focus on connection. Think creams, warm whites, linens, gentle earth tones, and subtle textures. Bare feet, relaxed silhouettes, and simple layers feel timeless and elevated. Logos and bold patterns tend to distract and are best avoided.

Feeding, Comfort & Pacing

A well-fed baby is always our priority. If possible, plan to feed your newborn just before we begin or at the start of the session. Breaks for feeding, soothing, or changing are not interruptions — they’re part of the story. Sessions are unhurried and baby-led.

A Note for Parents

There is nothing you need to do beyond showing up as you are. Rest when you can. Let the house be lived in. This season is tender and fleeting, and it deserves to be remembered honestly — the quiet, the chaos, the closeness.

Trust that I’m watching the light, the composition, and the moments in between. You simply live them.

FAQs

When should we schedule our newborn session?

Newborn sessions are ideally photographed within the first 2-3 weeks, but there’s flexibility. I follow baby’s lead and your family’s rhythm — there’s no rush to meet a “perfect” window. I do recommend waiting just a bit; no one is camera ready when you’re sleep deprived. I’ve photographed babies up to 6 weeks old and I promise you these are still just as tender moments.

What if our baby is fussy or won’t sleep?

That’s completely okay. I don’t require babies to sleep or pose. Awake moments, feeding, and being held are just as meaningful — often more so.

Can siblings and pets be included?

Yes, absolutely. Siblings are always welcome, and I typically photograph them early in the session while their attention is fresh. Pets are part of your family too and can absolutely be included.

What if we need to reschedule?

Life with a newborn is unpredictable. If illness, recovery, or exhaustion comes up, we’ll simply find a new date. I offer flexibility because this season deserves grace.
