Outfit Guidance for Lifestyle Sessions

Choosing what to wear for your session doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. My approach to wardrobe is rooted in simplicity, comfort, and authenticity — clothing that feels like you, photographs beautifully, and allows your connection to take center stage.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s ease, movement, and being fully present.

Start With Soft, Neutral Tones

Neutral and muted tones photograph timelessly and allow skin tones, expressions, and emotion to shine. I recommend starting with a soft, neutral base and layering in subtle texture.

Beautiful options include cream, ivory, oatmeal, beige, warm gray, muted blues, sage, olive, and soft blush. These tones age well and translate beautifully in both indoor and outdoor light.

Think Texture, Not Patterns

Texture adds visual interest without distraction. When possible, opt for fabrics that move and breathe rather than bold patterns or graphics.

Linen, cotton, knits, gauze, chambray, and light denim photograph especially well. If you choose a pattern, keep it subtle and minimal so the focus stays on connection rather than clothing.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Rather than everyone wearing the same color, think in terms of a cohesive palette. Choose two to three complementary tones and allow each person’s outfit to live within that range.

This creates visual harmony while still allowing individuality to come through — and keeps your images from feeling dated or overly styled.

Comfort Allows Connections.

If you’re comfortable, it shows. Choose clothing you can sit, walk, cuddle, and move in — especially when little ones are involved.

Avoid anything overly tight or restrictive. Bare feet or simple footwear often photograph beautifully, particularly for in-home or outdoor lifestyle sessions.

Simple Finishing Touches

You don’t need anything dramatic. Light, natural makeup and softly styled hair photograph timelessly. Clean hands, neutral nails, and minimal accessories keep the focus on you and your connection.

When in Doubt, Ask

If you’re ever unsure, I’m happy to help. You’re always welcome to send photos of outfit options, and I can guide you toward what will photograph best together.

Above all, remember — this session is about documenting your story as it is: real, connected, and beautifully lived in.

FAQs

What if I don’t own anything that fits this style?

That’s completely okay. Most clients already have everything they need in their closet. Start with simple, neutral pieces you feel comfortable in, and build from there. If you’re unsure, you’re always welcome to send me a few options and I’m happy to help guide you.

Should we dress up or keep things casual?

Think elevated everyday. Clothing should feel like a natural extension of how you live — comfortable, intentional, and easy to move in. When you feel like yourself, your photos will reflect that.

Do shoes matter?

Yes, but they don’t need to be complicated. Bare feet or simple, neutral shoes often photograph beautifully. Avoid overly athletic shoes or anything too bold that pulls attention away from connection.

Can we bring an extra outfit?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a backup outfit if time allows. While most lifestyle sessions flow best when we stay in one look, having an extra option can be helpful for peace of mind or quick adjustments. We’ll always prioritize a relaxed experience, and if a change fits naturally into the session, I’m happy to accommodate.
